An unhappy Mark Ravenshaw lives with his parents and still smarts from a disastrous love affair. But he finds reprieve in an offer to work in Venice for his Uncle Jem, a respected art and antiquities dealer. Mark falls instantly under the city's spell, but is tormented by desire for Uncle Jem's young assistant, Piero ... who also shares Jem's bed.

Mark soon finds himself obsessed by the amoral, beautiful Piero. Not even a sexual entanglement with Bruno, a former lover of Uncle Jem's, can assuage his longing. Unfortunately his beloved uncle stands in the path of Mark's desire. But for how long?

The story is a delightful adventure into the world of Venice, its communities and cuisine. The array of characters, from charming to innocent to despicable, lend realism to the story. The subtle beginning of the plot explodes brilliantly near the end, sending the main characters into further conflict with morality and their own weaknesses.

The story line is carefully crafted to form a coherent string of events cleverly ensconcing each character into his role. Mark Ravenshaw, a product of a troubled family, delves into the thick of life on his own. It is there that he encounters the demanding need for difficult decisions. He soon leans that choices have consequences. And the reader suffers along with him in constant conjecture of what comes next.

Although not my first choice of genre, the story captivated me in a peculiar way, transcending the genre into a universal tale of life's hard lessons. It is an intriguing novel to which I will return sometime and read again. I'm sure I missed a great deal the first time through. I recommend this book as an entertaining read.

Most enjoyable read - a marvelous blend of a captivating story, arts of all sorts (painting, sculpture, theater, music, etc.), characters who you come to know well and care about --- and wonderful Venice!
Beautiful and authentic descriptions of the fascinating city in the sea and the people who inhabit it - good, bad, and all in between.
A complex intertwining of M/M relationships, competitiveness, and devotion or lack of.
Highly recommended.

The Venetian Boy had me enthralled from the beginning pages. Peering out a gloomy window in New York State, Mark Ravenshaw yearns for something more than the intolerable familial hand he's been dealt. He wants out; he needs a change. For certainly where there's change there's opportunity, right? Author, Michael Willhoite, presents that opportunity in the charm and mystique of Venice. There in that labyrinth of footpaths, bridges and canals he weaves a compelling story of innocence, love, intrigue, treachery , betrayal and a good deal of family baggage. All the while through Mark's journey we live like the locals, experiencing the culinary and artistic life of Venice as the young man searches for what he believes he must find. Mr. Willhoite paints such an exquisite picture of the city that Venice itself plays a major character in this story.

This was such a relatable and well told story because of its truth and sincerity of character and its simple unpredictability. There are lessons to be learned. One's life experience makes us who we are. And Mark Ravenshaw learns much about life and himself through the characters he meets, all as colorful, rich and multi-faceted as the city itself. I highly recommend this book if you've ever been to Venice; if you've never been to Venice; if you've ever thought about running away in wonder of what else might possibly await you somewhere out there; or if you've got a rainy afternoon to yourself and want to peek in on some really interesting people.
I thought this was a very well written story. It took me to Venice as a visitor and a resident. The canals , bridges , churches and opera houses were vividly portrayed. Marcus was so much more than he could admit , he felt unsure , sad and un-loved. His passions ruled his private life. Would recommend this book to adults with an open mind and love of adventure.
The Venetian Boy by Michael Willhoite is well written and enjoyable. I've never been to Venice, don't speak Italian, and am heterosexual, but the deeper I got into the book, the more difficult it was to put down. The world of art and antiquities is very interesting and the Venice setting was fascinating. There is a good balance between love, mystery, Venice's attractions, food, drink and languages. The characters are varied and as changeable as chameleons, but all are believable. Who can Mark trust in this city of labyrinths and canals? What is the significance of the tin box? After a few chapters, I was completely hooked, and can hardly wait for his next book. I need another Willhoite fix!
