He imprisons her at Deadwater Manor, a psychiatric hospital with an unscrupulous past. Or can she fight against the nightmare that has now become her world?

Note This book is intended for ages 16+ due to profanity and sensual content.

BACKGROUND

The inspiration for the story came from Sandie's beloved father who worked in various psychiatric hospitals during short periods of his career. In the attic of one such hospital, he made a disturbing discovery - one that bothered Sandie so much, she had to create a story around it. Though fiction, many parts of the book intertwine the patient routines, treatments and outbursts that she learned from her father and other research in a way that makes the story vivid through Jeannie's perspective.

The Caging at Deadwater Manor eBook Sandie Will

Inspired by true events, "The Caging at Deadwater Manor" made me cringe and stuck in my brain like a demented 90's pop song. Following Jeannie, who has already been through a crap life with a dead mother and verbally abusive father, as she is tricked into admission into the infamous Deadwater Manor, this eerie read will haunt you. Frantically searching for a soul she can trust in the hell of Deadwater, Sandie sets her mind to escaping the horrific "treatments" and constant sexual threats surrounding her.
The ending... it hit me particularly hard. I can't say more than that, but wow. I did not see that coming. Can we talk about making this into a Netflix series?
Because of the sensitive content, this book is mature YA and up. I liken it to Ellen Hopkins level content.
Through her powerful writing, Sandie Will reminds us all that the most feared monsters live inside of humankind.

The Caging at Deadwater Manor eBook Sandie Will Reviews

Sometimes this book seems to be really over the top. On the other hand, I know from personal experience, that just a few less than professional 'professionals' combined with undiagnosed or misdiagnosed psychological issues can bring horrific consequences to the lives of vulnerable people. Add greed; societal taboos and prejudices to the mix... This is far from unthinkable. It takes enormous strength to break free of a corrupt system.
A young woman winds up accidentally signing herself in for psychiatric care after her evil father sends her to Deadwater Manor to visit an aunt. While there, she's kept in a cage in a hot attic. A very sad but true story. Because it might be fiction but these things have happened. Still happen. We've come a long way with psychiatry, but much more needs to be done and it's good to have page turners like this to remind us. A very well-written, well-paced novel with a likeable protagonist and chilling antagonists.
This story grabs you right from the start. Knowing that it was based on true events made my stomach actually hurt while reading it. It has that "Oh my GOD this is horrible but I can't look away" feeling to it. With an appalling yet plausible story line (everything weird happens in Florida), sick plot twists, and the corruption of a young unsuspecting girl by a warped parent, it reads like an updated V.C. Andrews novel on steroids.

A very intense Mature Young Adult read with profanity, torture, and sexual scenes approach with caution.

RECIPIENT OF THE 2017 READERS' FAVORITE HONORABLE MENTION BOOK AWARD IN YA HORROR
This book is intense! I'd classify this book somewhere between YA and NA, as the main character is subjected to some pretty intense situations.

This book sucker punches you in the gut, as you can only witness as 18 year old Jeannie is held captive in an insane asylum. Every word of every horror she is put through will stay with you.

And the ending, oh the ending... That's all I can say about that. Be prepared to be glued to the page. This is an amazing debut novel and I can't wait to find out what other stories Sandie Will has up lurking inside her!
An intense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the protagonist to make it safely through to the end, and what an ending!! I didn’t see that coming!

Jeannie’s dad hates her and after years of mentally abusing her, contrives with the staff at Deadwater Manor, psychiatric hospital, to have her locked away.

What she suffers at their hands is harrowing, and almost breaks her, but she doesn’t give up hope, and with the help of another ‘patient’ they plan their escape.

This debut novel from Sandie Will is well written and engaging. It draws the reader in to share in Jeannie’s terror and frustration.

Knowing that this is a fictional story doesn’t stop the feeling that this has possibly happened, or could happen, to someone, somewhere!
This is a polished independent novel that skillfully blends coming-of-age, mystery, and suspense genre elements. The pacing is excellent and well-wrought, drawing the reader along to share in Jean's terror, frustration, and helplessness, as well as her hope and resolve to escape.

The more mature and disturbing content -- the dehumanizing trials suffered by the protagonist during her institutionalization at a legally suspect facility at the hands of vindictive family and sadistic staff -- is handled organically and, to the extent possible, tastefully, reflecting the lived experiences of the protagonist without resorting to gratuitousness. (Nevertheless, I'd recommend against audiences below 16 years of age.) Similarly, I also found the protagonist's reactions to be realistic most of the time despite the outrageous circumstances in which she finds herself.

Furthermore, the reader must interpret whether the narrator is reliable or not, adding another layer to the novel; en route, we question, alongside the protagonist, if we are accurately perceiving the reality of the situation as the story unfolds. As a bonus, although the setting of Tampa is somewhat secondary to the tale, the author clearly knows the area well and that familiarity adds a nice sense of place.

I only had three minor complaints. The novel is set in the present, which did strike me as somewhat odd, as I at first assumed, given the subject matter, that I would be reading a 20th century historical fiction; admittedly, while this sort of occurrence is hopefully more rare today (and sterilization, once not uncommon by force, is now virtually impossible to obtain for a nulliparous woman under age 40 for any reason whatsoever, consent or not), it would be naive to say it's unthinkable. Second, of the two main antagonists at the facility, the orderly is well characterized as a classic abusive partner with the usual complexities; the nurse, on the other hand, simply seems psychopathic; of course, psychopaths exist and would self-select for employment at shady facilities like Deadwater, but I found myself wanting more from her -- some motivation, a story something besides unexplained hatred. Third, the ending wasn't entirely as satisfying as the meat of the novel, as the story quickly winds down in a few pages what is built in a hundred. (As an aside, it sent shivers down my spine to imagine that many went through what the protagonist did, and many of them spent the rest of their lives that way.)

In closing, I bought this book last night and stayed up all night to finish reading it -- I was anxious to learn the truth and the outcome. That alone makes it worth 5 stars.

Ms. Will shows talent with plotting, pacing, and character development, and after "Deadwater," I am certainly looking forward to her future releases. In the meantime, I recommend reading "Deadwater" as a thoroughly entertaining excursion.
